Two approaches by motor vehicle are from the north end. A causeway goes from Corpus Christi to North Padre Island (Park Road 22); and another from Port Aransas down Mustang Island via Park Road 53. The Visitor Center is about ten miles south of the junction of Park Roads 22 and 53. WHEN TO VISIT Open year round. Peak visitor month is August. Climate: Winter, 54 to 70 degrees F; Summer, 78 to 94 degrees F. POINTS OF INTEREST Noted for its wide sandy beaches, excellent fishing, and abundant bird and marine life, this barrier island stretches along the Gulf Coast for eighty-and-one-half miles. ACTIVITIES Visitor Center; museum/exhibits; self-guiding tours/trails; campgrounds; group campsites; hiking; horseback riding; swimming; bathhouse; boating; boat ramp; fishing; hunting. GENERAL INFORMATION Camping is permitted on seven-and-one-half miles of beach accessible by all two-wheel-drive vehicles, and fifty miles of beach accessible by four-wheel-drive vehicles. South of the Ranger Station, there is a paved campground with 42 sites, which may be used by trailers and recreational vehicles. Other campgrounds are at Padre Balli County Park and Mustang Island State Park. Food, supplies, and overnight accommodations are available in Corpus Christi and North Padre Island.
